About the Project

Bitcoin and Regional Economic Impact

Making Bitcoin Adoption Practical for Businesses

Bitcoin has the greatest impact where it is used regularly: in businesses and real-world economic cycles.

Experience from various regions around the world shows that when businesses accept Bitcoin as a means of payment, value creation remains local, dependencies decrease, and economic resilience grows. We are familiar with this principle from history—and today, with Bitcoin, we have a globally accessible, tamper-proof tool for the first time.

Yet there is a wide gap between technical and investment-focused discussions and the reality of business:

  • SME owners ask: “What’s in it for me, exactly? Is it worth it?”—not for details about blockchain or tips on speculation.

  • Bitcoin holders are looking for places where they can spend their Bitcoin meaningfully—but so far, only a few SMEs in the DACH region accept it.

  • The potential for resilience and decentralized value creation remains untapped.

BitcoinKMU bridges this gap.

We translate Bitcoin into practical business insights and actionable strategies—objectively, practically, and without the hype.

Goals and Measures

What we want to achieve and how:

1. Making Bitcoin adoption attractive and easy to understand for business owners

  • Book “Bitcoin Onboarding Guide for SMEs”: A practical handbook that explains, step by step, how to integrate Bitcoin as a payment method in a secure and legally compliant manner—from setting up a wallet and technical integration to accounting, taxes, and risk management.

  • Decision Matrix: A free online tool that allows businesses to assess in just a few minutes whether and to what extent Bitcoin makes sense for their operations.

  • Additional short guides and checklists on topics such as volatility management, Lightning, and customer communication.

2. Implement real-world projects

  • Pilot Projects: Together with selected SMEs, we are implementing full Bitcoin payment acceptance. The processes are documented, evaluated, and published as freely available best-practice case studies. The insights gained are directly incorporated into the book. The first pilot project, involving a canyoning operator in Styria, is already underway.

  • PR & Visibility Packages: Participating businesses receive support with their communications—to reach new customer groups, build regional visibility, and establish an authentic positioning as a forward-thinking company.

  • The first pilot businesses are already in the planning stages.

3. Build a network for long-term adoption

  • Implementer Membership: Regular, actionable updates on legal, tax, technical, and marketing topics for companies that are already using Bitcoin or seriously considering it.

  • Knowledge Platform: A central repository of tools, real-world examples, case studies, and guides.

  • Partnerships: With tax advisors, accountants, technology service providers, and Bitcoin specialists in the DACH region.

About Me

Who is behind BitcoinKMU?

Money is just information

I am the driving force behind this project: Alex Michaelis.

I am a trained craftswoman and a certified documentary filmmaker. For over twelve years, until the onset of the pandemic, I ran my own small business—and I’ve experienced all the ups and downs that small business owners face: from bookkeeping to the daily challenges of dealing with banks, cash flow, and economic uncertainty.

I didn’t discover Bitcoin through speculation or hype, but out of necessity. A research project that went completely differently than planned put me in a situation where I was suddenly unbanked. In my search for solutions to survive and regain my financial footing, I discovered Bitcoin and the enormous practical power it holds—and how much I wish I had known and understood these possibilities years earlier.

My education as a certified documentary specialist (an intensive combination of media, communication, and information sciences) taught me to thoroughly research and examine complex technical and social issues and to present them in a way that makes them understandable and useful for ordinary people. It is precisely this skill that I bring to BitcoinKMU today.

For me, this project isn’t just another “Bitcoin project.” It’s an attempt to create something truly meaningful and important: to spare SME entrepreneurs the same costly learning curves I had to go through myself, and to show them concrete, practical ways in which Bitcoin can make their businesses stronger, more independent, and more resilient.

That is why BitcoinKMU is truly being built from the ground up—by a former small business owner for the SME sector.
